Mission San Luis Rey – A Living Landmark

Founded in 1798, Mission San Luis Rey is known as the “King of the Missions.” Still an active Friary, it’s one of the few missions that remains a working religious community. Visitors can explore a serene cemetery (open to all faiths), take part in spiritual retreats, attend special events, and visit a museum full of local history, artifacts, and architecture.

The renovated gift shop features artisan goods, mission-themed items for school projects, and Catholic gifts. It’s also home to California’s first pepper tree, the oldest burial site in North San Diego County still in use, and the heritage of the Luiseño people.
